The digital geologic map data was prepared by the\n USGS. Subsequent editing of the spatial data by the USGS was\n limited to fitting a standardized state boundary to the data,\n standardizing the arc coding, reprojecting the data, and minor\n edits of arc or polygon attributes to conform with the paper\n map. This open-file report is one of several that present the\n preliminary results of the USGS Mineral Resources Program\n activity to compile a national-scale geologic map database to\n support national and regional level projects, including mineral\n resource and geoenvironmental assessments. The only\n comprehensive sources of regional- and national-scale geologic\n maps are state geologic maps with scales ranging from 1:100,000\n to 1:1,000,000. Digital versions of these state maps form the\n core of what is presented here. Because no adequate geologic\n map exists for the state of Alaska, it is being compiled in\n regional blocks that also form part of this national database.\n It is expected that this series will completed by approximately\n the end of 2007. These maps and databases are being released in\n blocks of states or, in the case of Alaska, as compiled blocks\n of 1:250,000-scale quadrangles as chapters in this series. For\n Alaska, formal maps as well as databases are being published\n here, whereas for the conterminous U.S. only state databases and\n preview graphics are presented, because published maps for most\n states already exist. For Alaska these regional compilations\n will form the base for compiling a new geologic map of the\n state. As documented in CONUSdocumentationMW.pdf, standards for\n the conterminous U.S. are somewhat different than those for\n Alaska and Hawaii.\n Purpose:\n A primary goal of this work is to develop geologic map datasets\n with standardized structure and attribution. The database design\n and standards are documented in CONUSdocumentationMW.pdf of this\n series. The intent is that contiguous databases can be merged\n seamlessly and without any additional effort. In addition to a\n common database structure, the conterminous U.S. state databases\n (the contiguous 48 states) have been fitted to a set of standard\n state boundaries so that, when states are merged, they match\n without slivers or overlap. No attempt has been made to reconcile\n differences in mapping across state boundaries.\n Supplemental_Information:\n This database consists of five major Arc/Info GIS datasets for\n each state; - one: geologic map with formations, - two: faults\n (where present), - three: dikes (where present), - four:\n miscellaneous line features (where present), - five:\n miscellaneous point features (where present).\n\n Time_Period_of_Content:\n Time_Period_Information:\n Single_Date/Time:\n Calendar_Date: 2004\n Currentness_Reference: publication date\n Status:\n Progress: Complete\n Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: None planned.\n Spatial_Domain:\n Bounding_Coordinates:\n West_Bounding_Coordinate: -91.054582\n East_Bounding_Coordinate: -81.020915\n North_Bounding_Coordinate: 48.435645\n South_Bounding_Coordinate: 41.205085\n Keywords:\n Theme:\n Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: none\n Theme_Keyword: geology\n Place:\n Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: none\n Place_Keyword: USA\n Place_Keyword: Michigan\n Theme:\n Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: National Geologic Map Database Catalog themes, augmented\n Theme_Keyword: 3100 - Vector\n Theme_Keyword: 3110 - ESRI\n Theme_Keyword: 3112 - export\n Theme_Keyword: 1100 - Geology\n Theme_Keyword: 1101 - General\n Place:\n Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: Augmented FIPS 10-4 and FIPS 6-4, version 1.0\n Place_Keyword: US26 = Michigan\n Access_Constraints: none\n Use_Constraints:\n This database is not meant to be used or displayed at any scale\n other than 1:500,000.\n\n Any hardcopies utilizing these data sets shall clearly indicate\n their source. Then a joinitem was\n performed to join the look-up table to the polygon attribute\n table. orig_label was used as the merge item.\n Process_Date: 20040406\n Process_Step:\n Process_Description:\n Next, in preparing the uniform .aat file, the following\n items were added to the table:\n\n item name: arc-code width:\t3 output:\t3 type:\ti\n\n item name: arc-para1 width:\t3 output:\t3 type:\ti\n\n item name: arc-para2 width:\t3 output:\t3 type:\ti\n\n item name: source width:\t6 output:\t8 type:\tc\n\n Process_Date: 20040406\n Process_Step:\n Process_Description:\n Arc-code was populated using the paper map source to tag the\n lines using the AAT line type data dictionary (see\n CONUSdocumentationMW.pdf).\n\n Arc-para1 was populated when additional information was\n available such as identifying the upthrown side of a fault\n or direction of thrusting on a fault. (see\n CONUSdocumentationMW.pdf)\n\n Arc-para2 is a scratch field that is used mostly in Alaska.\n\n Source was populated with an alphanumeric code (e.g. US001)\n that designates the source used for the linework.\n Process_Date: 20040406\n Process_Step:\n Process_Description:\n Once the .aat and the .pat were populated with the correct\n attributes, the coverage was exported as an .e00 file\n
