An Integrated Study to Better Understand the Distribution of Salt Domes in the Jazan City and Surroundings

This project involves a variety of geophysical and InSAR techniques to detect the emergence of salt domes in Jazan City and Southern coastline of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia.  We are developing techniques to detect subsurface salt domes that could inhibit future city growth. Currently, we are investigating the causes of uplift and subsidence as there are many natural hazards associated with the arid coastal environment. ERS-1/2, Envisat and Sentinel-1 radar imagery provided by European Space Agency are being used to map areas undergoing deformation over 10 years and the results will be compared with deformation measured by continuous GPS stations from the surrounding areas.
