We continue, build on, and expand the scope of our ongoing GRACE-funded research titled “Monitoring deep aquifer response to climatic variability using GRACE data” in three major ways. Firstly, the study is not restricted to deep aquifers but expands to include shallow aquifers, basins, and reservoirs. Secondly, we use GRACE data not only to monitor but also to assess the nature (slow versus fast; prolonged versus short) of the hydrologic system’s response to climate variability. Thirdly, based on understanding the hydrologic system’s response, we develop conceptual and quantitative hydrologic models to utilize best the investigated hydrologic systems under the projected climatic conditions of the 21st century.
